Dear Friends,
I am not a big follower of Britain’s royal family though I must admit I did enjoy watching The Crown on Netflix. As I approach seventy years of life, I have to acknowledge that I lived through most of those same historical events which were portrayed in The Crown and it brought back memories. The series continually presented a fascinating portrait of what it means to be a public person and the role that must be played if you accept the crown. The Queen was not always happy with the role but she accepted it as part of the responsibility of being in the royal family.
The video message of the Princess of Wales to the people of Britain this week I thought did a good job of being humble and teaching people what really matters in life. Back in March the Princess of Wales announced that she was undergoing preventative chemotherapy. The recent video message shared how difficult the journey has been not only for the princess, but her family, too:
“The last nine months have been incredibly tough for us as a family. Life as you know it can change in an instant and we have had to find a way to navigate the stormy waters and road unknown.”
Yet, the message also pointed out how her medical diagnosis made her focus on the essentials in life:
“With humility, it also brings you face to face with your own vulnerabilities in a way you have never considered before, and with that, a new perspective on everything. This time has above all reminded William and me to reflect and be grateful for the simple yet important things in life, which so many of us often take for granted. Of simply loving and being loved.”
The video shows the love between the prince and princess, and their children. It is heartwarming and shows that their happiness stems from being together as a family. And that is of much greater value than any jewel or crown they get to wear.
Catherine thanks all her well-wishers in the video for their “kindness, empathy and compassion,” which she says is very humbling. She also offered her continued support to all those suffering with cancer. “To all those who are continuing their own cancer journey – I remain with you, side by side, hand in hand.”
Her message ends with powerful words that seem inspired straight from the Bible. Advice that can apply to anyone facing any difficulties in life: “Out of darkness, can come light so let that light shine bright.”’
Like the future Queen of England, all those who are facing serious illness can be a reminder to all of us to focus on the things in life that really matter and to trust our journey to the God who made us. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the princess, as well as all those who are battling cancer.
Peace,
Fr. Damian
